Annual Checkups That Actually Catch Problems Early
Look, I’ll be honest with you. Most people think annual exams are just about getting shots updated. And yeah, that’s part of it. But here’s what really happens during a good wellness exam, we’re looking for the stuff you can’t see yet.
That slight heart murmur that wasn’t there last year. The early kidney changes that show up in bloodwork before your dog acts sick. The dental disease that’s been quietly brewing. This is the stuff that saves you thousands down the road and gives your pet more good years.
We do wellness exams throughout West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County. Some visits happen at your house, some at our clinic in Lantana, depending on your needs.
Why Bother With Routine Checkups?
You know how you’re supposed to get your own annual physical but maybe you skip a year (or three)? Pets are the same, except they age faster and hide problems better.
Dogs and cats are really, really good at acting fine when they’re not. It’s a survival thing. By the time you notice something’s wrong, it’s often been going on for a while.
During a wellness exam in your home, here’s what we actually do:
- Complete physical I’m checking everything from nose to tail, literally
- Heart and lung sounds listening for murmurs, irregular rhythms, breathing issues
- Joint and mobility check especially important as they age
- Skin, ears, eyes infections love to hide in ears
- Weight and body condition obesity is huge problem, no pun intended
- Dental assessment bad teeth affect way more than just breath
- Lab work when needed bloodwork tells us what we can’t see on the outside
The goal isn’t just finding problems. It’s catching them early when they’re cheaper and easier to fix.
Different Ages, Different Needs
A puppy exam looks nothing like a senior dog checkup. We adjust based on what actually matters for your pet’s life stage.
Puppies and Kittens
New pets need a solid foundation. We’re checking growth patterns, making sure vaccines are on schedule, getting parasite prevention started. This is also when we talk about spaying/neutering timing and basic training stuff.
Adult Pets (1-7 Years)
These are usually the easy years. Annual checkups focus on maintaining health, keeping weight good, teeth clean, staying current on preventive care. We’re also establishing baseline lab values so we know what’s normal for your pet specifically.
Senior Pets (7+ Years)
Older cats and dogs need more attention. We usually recommend checkups every six months instead of annually. Arthritis, kidney function, heart health, cognitive changes these things sneak up. The more often we see them, the better we can manage aging gracefully.
What Actually Happens During the Visit
Pretty straightforward process. We try to keep it stress-free, which is easier at home for most pets.
Medical History Discussion
We’ll talk about changes from last time. Eating differently? Drinking more water? Acting weird? You know your pet better than anyone, so this matters.
Hands-On Exam
I’ll be examining your pet thoroughly. It usually takes 10-15 minutes. You’d be surprised what we find just by looking and feeling carefully.
Diagnostic Work If Needed
Blood tests, urine checks, fecal samples not every visit needs labs, but they’re really valuable for catching hidden problems.
Vaccines and Prevention
We update what needs updating. Not every vaccine is annual, so we’re only giving what’s actually due.
Nutrition Chat
Most pets could lose a few pounds. We talk about realistic feeding plans and whether your current food makes sense.
Your Questions
This is when you ask about that weird thing they’ve been doing, or whether that bump is concerning, or literally anything else.
Why People Use Our Practice
After 30+ years doing this, we’ve figured out what actually works. Our approach is pretty simple: thorough exams, honest advice, and we don’t waste your time with unnecessary stuff.

How often does my pet really need a wellness exam?
Healthy adult pets: once a year minimum. Seniors or pets with medical issues: every six months. Puppies and kittens: more frequently while they’re young.
Do I have to do vaccines every visit?
Nope. Some vaccines are every three years. We only give what’s due based on your pet’s lifestyle and risk factors. Not every dog needs every vaccine.
What's a wellness exam cost in West Palm Beach?
Depends on your pet and what’s needed. Basic exams run $60-120 typically. Add labs, vaccines, or other services and it goes up. Wellness packages save money if you’re doing regular visits.
Does my pet need blood tests every year?
For younger, healthy pets maybe not. For seniors or anyone on medication absolutely yes. Blood work catches problems before symptoms show up. It’s probably the most valuable preventive thing we do.
Can you come to my house for wellness exams?
Yeah, for most routine visits. House calls work great for checkups, vaccines, basic care. Anything needing X-rays or advanced equipment happens at the clinic.
Look, Here’s the Thing
Wellness exams aren’t exciting. Nobody wakes up thinking “can’t wait to take my dog to the vet today.” But this is how you avoid the emergencies that happen at 11pm on a Saturday.
Finding things early makes a huge difference. The kidney disease we catch at stage 1 is manageable. Stage 4? We’re talking about way more expensive treatment and shorter time left.
Same with dental disease, arthritis, heart conditions, diabetes all of it. Early detection isn’t just marketing speak. It genuinely matters.
Your pet will thank you. Eventually. After they forgive you for the car ride.
